It may be old news by now, but there will be no next generation Xbox or PlayStation unveiled at this year’s E3. I have hesitated to talk about this because by tomorrow we’ll likely hear more news that contradicts what we know today—but for now, that’s the story coming from Microsoft and Sony representatives.
Rumors up until a couple days ago have been pretty clear that both new consoles would make some sort of appearance at E3—not as clear, perhaps, as what was said by Microsoft France’s marketing director, Cedrick Delmax to Le Point.fr.
"We're in an industry that talks a lot, that likes to tell stories. I am not convinced things will happen this year.”
"Xbox 360′s cycle is not at all finished. The proof is that we don't see the logic in cutting the price this year. E3 is still premature. What's certain is that there'll be nothing new in 2012."
That last part is pretty clear.
In an interview on the same site, Playstation France’s CEO, Philippe Cardone also made it clear that Sony wouldn't be rushing its next generation console release.
"Wii is pressed for time because it's in decline. In our case, we have a lot less pressure. We were the last to release PS3, and we will probably be the last to announce something."

According to recent rumors and Inside Mobile Apps, Microsoft has plans to discontinue their virtual currency system, Microsoft Points, by the end of this year.
This is good news, as MS Points have been a source of disgust for many gamers since they were introduced alongside the XBL Marketplace in 2005. Besides the deceptive Points to real-world currency ratio and the perpetual need to buy more Points than necessary for a purchase (damn you leftover points!), the system is dated and out of line with current standards.
Microsoft isn’t talking, of course, but reports suggest a cash-based system in line with PSN, Apple and Android marketplaces will replace the existing system. This change will not only affect Xbox Live, but the Zune Marketplace and Windows Phone Marketplace as well.
Let’s cross our fingers that this rumor turns out to be true.

Life is funny. Sometimes you don’t know something’s broken until one day you get a contraption in the mail that looks like a gadget off of Batman’s utility belt and you snap it on to your controller. Even then, as you proceed to relearn everything you know, you wonder if what you knew was the right way to do things anyway. You savvy? Probably not.
Below is my review of The Avenger controller adaptor by N-Control. The opinions herein belong to me alone and do not reflect those of KontrolFreek.
The Avenger snaps easily to your standard Xbox 360 controller. All you have to do is open it like a clamshell, insert your controller and close until it snaps. The Avenger also comes with a couple foam stickers that you place on both bumpers and the “A” button. I wasn’t sure at first why these were even included (they made the whole package seem hokey) but after playing with them for a while I quickly understood that N-Control has their reasons. They add a subtle yet effective tactile-ness to the remaining “naked” buttons. Nice touch. You’ll then need to make a few small adjustments by experimenting with how you would like to position the levers/rockers. Once you’ve got everything where you want it, you’re mostly good to go. The “trigger skis” feel a tad awkward at first—especially because I normally let my index fingers do the shooting—and the intimidation aspect is certainly something to consider. I’d recommend staying offline until you get a feel for it.
After playing a few levels of Halo: Reach’s campaign, I started to adjust. I was able to reload and switch weapons without ever taking my thumb off the right stick—definitely a plus when tracking those pesky Elites. Actions felt intuitive and fast, however, sometimes during intense firefights my fingers would accidentally do something I didn’t want them to do, like switch weapons instead of melee. Obviously, with more practice and further adjustment of the lever-thingys this can probably be remedied. Even while using the Avenger not as intended (by ignoring the levers and just using it like you’d normally use a controller), the mechanism that engages the face buttons brings the buttons much closer to your Freek-raised right thumbstick and lets you make some ultra-fast actions. Goodnight Covees!
The many positives do come at a cost, though. Every headset will not be compatible. The SteelSeries 7XB that I’m currently using is not compatible; nor will most that use a “puck” style jack for voice chat. Bummer.
Overall, I really like the Avenger. It’s a cool looking attachment that functions well alongside some FPS Freeks. With some more practice, I think I could probably go online and be competitive—I won’t yet—but I think I could. The learning (or relearning) curve is a commitment. It will take some time and patience to get comfortable with it. I have no doubt, though, that in the right hands the Avenger could be a dangerous weapon.
Retail price: $49.99

Welcome!
Good afternoon, evening, morning and night! Wherever you are in the world, we’d like to welcome you to the place where time is irrelevant and rare zombie codes wait patiently for redemption. We are pleased to meet all of you new fans from Facebook and we welcome back all you original Freeks who have been with us since the beginning.
What we’ve got here is…
About a month ago we got our hands on a couple of those rare Call of Duty: Black Ops zombie maps and avatar outfit cards that shipped with the Prestige and Hardened editions of the game (thanks, @NuckFuggets!). People went crazy! Over the past few weeks we’ve noticed a bunch of you asking for “moar zombie maps pweez,” “I can haz zombie maps nao,” and “gimme zombie maps kthnxbai.” Silly internet memes aside, we heard you.
Rapid fire!
Here’s how it’s going to work: throughout the day we will be firing codes out at you over Facebook. The first one to redeem each code will be the winner. To make things more challenging, we’ll be replacing one or more of the code characters with a question mark(s) and you’ll need to guess the missing character(s) to win. We have a total of six codes to give out—three map packs and three avatar outfits. Two avatar outfits and two map packs are for Xbox 360 and the other map pack and avatar outfit is for PS3. We’ll say what the code is for when we post it. Good luck!
FAQ
Q: Where do I redeem the code?
A: For Xbox 360 or Xbox.com. While signed into Xbox LIVE, go to the Marketplace blade, then select “Redeem Code.” From there, use the keyboard to type in the code. On Xbox.com, go to this page (after you sign in) and enter the code. Hint: Pasting the code will work with some browsers.
A: For PS3. Go to the PlayStation Network tab, select “Account Management” and then “Redeem Codes.” You can also redeem codes while accessing the PlayStation Store.
Q: What are the question marks (?) I see in the codes?
A: To make it more challenging we have replaced one (or more) of the code characters with a question mark. You need to guess the missing character(s) to win.
Q: I entered the code, but I get an error that the code is not valid! I know I entered it correctly.
A: You probably did enter the code correctly, but someone has already redeemed the code.
Q: What do you mean someone entered the code already?
A: Each code is only good ONCE. That means that the first person to correctly enter the code will get the item for free.
Q: How do people enter the code so quickly!
A: They may own a chat pad, or be using a USB Keyboard. It is much quicker to enter codes using one of these methods.
Q: I was working / sleeping/ eating/ taking a test/ stuck in traffic when you posted the code. Can you send me one?
A: No. Sorry.
Q: It’s my birthday! Can you send me a code?
A: No. Happy Birthday though!
Q: When will you give them out? Is it a certain time?
A: Nope. Your best option is to keep checking Facebook throughout the day.
Q: Are the codes good where I live?
A: Probably. There may be some restrictions but we’re not aware of them.
Q: I live in (insert country here) can I participate in your code give away?
A: Sure. Anyone can participate.
Q: Do you have any more codes once these are gone?
A: Nope.

Rumors have been circulating that Microsoft's new Windows 8 OS will introduce Xbox 360 compatibility to PC's. This is probably just a rumor, but if it's not, it could free up some space on my desk, and that would be cool.
It would supposedly work by popping an Xbox 360 disk directly in to your PC's disk drive and letting Windows 8 do its thing. The rumors also suggest that gamers will be able to access their Xbox 360 Dashboard and Xbox Live service straight through their computer—eliminating the need for an Xbox 360 console. And here's where things get iffy. Would Microsoft really be so bold as to undermine their highly successful Xbox 360's value by doing something like this? Mattel's online Magic 8 Ball says: “Cannot predict now.” Thanks a lot, stupid online 8 ball.
Technically speaking, I see no reason why this wouldn't be possible. After all, the Xbox 360 uses an every day DVD drive and isn't very graphically demanding by today's standards. The only real issue would be the aforementioned “iffy” situation.
It's also worth noting that the same rumors indicate a premium fee will be needed to access Xbox Live via Windows 8. Whether or not that is above and beyond the standard Xbox Live subscription remains a mystery.

KontrolFreek Celebrates Forty Years of Arcade Games by Unveiling America’s Favorite Title Pac-Man Ranked Number One by 79 Percent of American’s Ages 18-70
ATLANTA – June 28, 2011 – Remember when an arcade was the only place you could go for the thrill of a game? Just forty years ago, before the Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii, teenagers across the country gathered up loose change and headed to pizza parlors, miniature golf courses and arcades to play their favorite video games. An online research survey conducted by KontrolFreek and IBOPE Zogby found that Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and Space Invaders have stood the test of time and are America’s all-time favorite arcade games.
The top 10 favorite arcade games in the KontrolFreek and IBOPE Zogby 2011 survey of active gamers are:
- Pac-Man
- Donkey Kong
- Space Invaders
- Asteroids
- Frogger
- Ms. Pac-Man
- Centipede
- Pong
- Mortal Kombat
- Galaga
The complete survey results can be found on the KontrolFreek website.
“While all of these games kept it simple, they were able to give game players a truly unique and memorable experience,” said KontrolFreek CEO Ashish Mistry. “As the leader in creating performance gaming gear for the active gamer lifestyle, we created the innovative Rcade Freek to breathe new life into gaming classics by giving console players the feel of an arcade joystick in the palm of their hand.”
The Rcade Freek was developed based on extensive user research and provides gamers a classic feel by improving the ergonomics, comfort, and precision of their Xbox 360 or PS3 controller. To further celebrate this 40-year milestone, KontrolFreek is releasing two new color options, Retro Red and Groovy Green, for its newest gaming accessory. The new Rcade Freek colors are available now and are priced at $9.99.
Joining in the celebration, celebrity video game players weighed in on their favorite arcade games and memories:
Alison Haislip, NBC’s “The Voice” V Room and G4’s “Attack of the Show!” : “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was my favorite. It was the game my brother and I played whenever our mother took us to Pizza Hut.”
James Kyson Lee, CBS’ “Hawaii 5-0” and NBC’s “Heroes”:
“Definitely Street Fighter II: Champion Edition and Super Street Fighter II Turbo were my favorite arcade games. During high school, we used to go to the burger joint that had it and have our own tournaments, lining up quarters on the machine to mark who was next. At the time, it had the most number of combination moves, characters, and story - and it was a challenge to finish the game.”
AJ LoCascio, Back to the Future: The Game:
“Easily the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game was my favorite. It was too perfect. I think my favorite memory of it was playing it recently at my friend Dennis's house; he has an arcade cabinet in his apartment and four of us played and beat the game on the spot.”
Fun Survey and Arcade Game Facts:
- 57.4 percent of republicans preferred blasting Asteroids versus 48.1 percent of democrats
- 7.1 percent of married people included Punch Out as their favorite game versus 20.9 percent of singles and 26.3 percent of divorced respondents
- In 1971, the first known coin-operated arcade video game, The Galaxy Game, made its debut on the campus of Stanford University
- Centipede was the first game that was designed by a woman
- According to Guinness World Records Williams’ Blaster cockpit is the most valuable arcade machine with an estimated worth of $12,000
- The fastest perfect Pac-Man score was achieved in 2009 by David Race who completed the game flawlessly in 3 hours, 41 minutes, and 22 seconds
- Pac-Man, Dragon's Lair, and Pong are all on permanent display at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
- According to Wikipedia, Pac-Man revenues equaled 10 billion quarters by the late 1990s
- Notable celebrities who are also turning 40 this year include Ewan McGregor, Snoop Dogg, Mark Wahlberg, Emmanuel Lewis, Mariah Carey, Luke Wilson, Jada Pinkett Smith and many others
