Recently Microsoft announced a 4GB Xbox 360 console with Kinect bundle for $99—a shockingly low price that’s sure to turn some heads. But, is it a good deal?
On the surface, a $99 price tag seems too good to be true. I mean really… a console with Kinect for $99? That’s less expensive than a PS3, Wii or even any handheld device out there. Count me in!
But, as you know—if something sounds too good to be true it usually is—and that’s the case here if you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into.
If you’re a smart consumer who pays attention to things, you’ve probably already noticed the asterisk (*) next to the $99 price. This indicates something. In this case it indicates a required 2 year contract to Xbox Live Gold at $15/month. Ouch.
So let’s do the math:
A new 4GB Xbox 360 with Kinect bundle costs about $300. Add 2 years ($50/year) of XBL Gold and you’re up to $400.
With this new bundle you start with a $100 for the console and then add $15 each month for 2 years (24 months). That gives you a grand total of $460.
Honestly, it’s not a bad deal as long as you realize what the total cost ends up being after your contract is up. Knowing that, what do you think? Do you find that a $99 + $15/month subscription model is easier to swallow than $300 + $50 + $50?
Let me know what you think via Twitter.

More than two years later, Heavy Rain for PS3 still stands alone as the most unique and best interactive experience on any current generation console. You can disagree with me if you want, but you’re definitely wrong.
There have been some great experiences since then—Skyrim and Amnesia: The Dark Descent come to mind—but neither one of those is necessarily what I’d call “unique”. Are they both superb games? Yes. Are they both really fun to play? Yes, yes they are. Unique, though? Not really.
I won’t fully rehash my enduring love for Heavy Rain here, but if you’d like to read my review from back in 2010, feel free.
The reason I’m talking about old games is because last week at GDC 2012, Quantic Dream, creators of Heavy Rain, showed off a tech demo for the PlayStation 3’s real-time rendering capabilities and a new motion capture method called full-performance capture. The demo brings to life a female android named Kara. Kara is being assembled by robotic arms and running through her initialization sequence when a spark of independent thought prompts engineers to begin disassembling her for being “defective”. After begging for her life, Kara is warily put back together and joins the other androids, promising not to cause any further problems.
It’s a captivating and emotional piece that provokes the imagination. It reminds me that too many games today fail to incite emotion and makes me wish more developers would take chances with the games they make.
Though Quantic Dream denies that the demo is tied to a current project, I really hope to see more of Kara someday soon.

It’s official! One of the most anticipated games of the year, BioShock Infinite’s U.S. release date is set for October 16th for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC (Oct. 19th Internationally).
This is both good and bad news for people like me who’ve wanted this game since the original teaser back in 2010.
The good news is that we finally have a date to look forward to.
The bad news is that seven months is a hell of a long time to wait.
In the meantime, enjoy this rather pleasant trailer from December’s VGA's featuring the lyrical stylings of Courtnee Draper.

Calling MrErnestLe a Call of Duty expert would be an extreme understatement. Ernest has been playing the CoD series since the very first Modern Warfare and has been honing his FPS skills all along the way. For MW3, Ernest was the first worldwide 10th Prestige player across all consoles! That’s a pretty impressive feat to say the least. To stay up to date with all things Ernest Le, check out his Twitch TV channel—streaming live each and every day. Want to find yourself right here? Submit an application and “level up!”
