The Biggest Explosions in Gaming!

by Ashish Mistry 03 Jul 2017

It’s just a day away from Independence Day, which means grills are getting fired up, bathing suits are being donned and the perhaps the greatest aspect of the 4th of July is being prepped, fireworks. As the sky darkens on the 4th, spectacular displays of fireworks light up the sky all over the country, making Independence Day the most explosive holiday of the year. To celebrate the 4th, we wanted to take a look at some of the biggest explosions in gaming to get you into the spirit of the holiday. From tactical nukes, to cataclysmic detonations, explosions and video games go hand in hand and are hallmark features in some of our favorite titles! So look to the sky as we reveal KontrolFreek’s list of the top explosions in gaming!

Tactical Nuke – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Killstreaks in Call of Duty serve as a reward for players who manage to maintain a series of kills without being taken down. At the steep requirement of 25 kills (24 if you are using the Hardline Perk) the tactical nuke is the ultimate reward for players who managed the difficult feat of racking up such a high streak. Appropriately ending any match regardless of score, the blaring warning siren followed by a bright flash of light beckoned the end of a game and complete annihilation of the battlefield. If you remember pushing for that 25 killstreak to be the one to drop the nuke, then you know exactly why the tactical nuke leads off our list as one of the top explosions in gaming! If you are still working on getting your killstreak count high enough to launch some of the best rewards, KontrolFreek can help you get there with an entire series of gaming gear designed specifically for Call of Duty!

The Experimental MIRV – Fallout 3
Bethesda’s Fallout 3 drops the protagonist into the middle of an irradiated wasteland and suggests a direction. The great thing about the Fallout series is that you aren’t really forced to follow the main story, as it’s entirely reasonable to simply explore the world and find new sidequests. However, should you follow the main storyline long enough, you will eventually be introduced to the Fat Man, a portable device that launches miniature nuclear bombs from the shoulder of its user. Strategically dropping nukes in Fallout 3 can be loads of fun, but upon exploring the wasteland, the player will start finding clues that allude to a shelter from days before nuclear war ravaged the world. Collecting all these clues will grant the player access to the bomb shelter in the National Guard Depot, and the top secret weapon within. What’s better than firing one mini nuke at your enemies (or allies since this is, after all, a Fallout game)? Firing 8 mini nukes at a time with the Experimental MIRV! This weapon is so powerful that more often than not it destroys everything within sight, often including the protagonist itself. The Experimental MIRV safely secures itself as one of the most entertaining and explosive weapons in video game history!

Literally any gun from the Torgue Corporation – Borderlands 2
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the original Borderlands, released in 2009, holds the record for the most guns in a video game. For a series that prides itself on diversity in firepower, it was a (awesome) surprise when in Borderlands 2, every single gun produced by the Torgue Corporation fires not bullets, but rockets and explosions! The obsession with explosive weapons is explained with the introduction of Mister Torgue High-Five Flexington, founder of the Torgue Corporation and lover of all things explosive. Mister Torgue demands all things be badass, and what could be more badass than EXPLOSIONS!? While any Torgue weapon provides explosive firepower, a few legendary weapons such as the Devastator, Nukem and Carnage provide a pretty clear picture of what Torgue weapons are all about!

Supernova – Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 7 is arguably the most iconic chapter in the history of the franchise, spawning spinoff titles, its own movie and a recently announced remake for the PlayStation 4. Sure the game has giant swords, massive bosses and an epic storyline, but anyone who managed to make it to the end of the game knows that it also has one of the biggest explosions in video game history. In the penultimate showdown with the game’s primary antagonist, Sephiroth, his final form is revealed and he gains access to his most powerful attack, Supernova. Perhaps because FF7 was the series’ first foray into 3-D animation, or perhaps the developers simply wanted to emphasize the sheer scale of Sephiroth’s power, the final result is a nearly 2 minute long attack animation in which the entire solar system is destroyed by the the ability. One could argue that this is a bit of a hyperbole, because assuming your team survives the attack, things immediately go back to the original battle screen on a decidedly undestroyed earth. Regardless of the details, Supernova stands as one of the ultimate explosions in a game, and we can’t wait to see it remastered soon!

The Pillar of Autumn – Halo
Halo: Combat Evolved completely changed the way first person shooters operated when it was released over 15 years ago. Featuring fast paced gameplay and an epic story, the first chapter of Halo gave us some of the most memorable moments in any FPS game, especially the explosive ending that secures its place as one of the best explosions in video games. Appropriately for a game that takes place on a ring-world, the story of Halo concludes at the very place it started. The Pillar of Autumn is the ship that carried Master Chief and his allies to Halo, and the final level finds you weaponizing the ship’s engines to completely destroy the ring. What follows is one of the most epic drive sequences in any game as you race to escape the blast. This unforgettable explosion still stands out in our minds over 15 years since release and it absolutely earns its place as one of the all time best explosions in a video game!

We hope this list of video game explosions has got you in the holiday spirit! Leave us a comment below if you feel like we missed one your most memorable explosions in gaming. Enjoy your holiday, and make sure you don’t miss the fireworks for Independence Day!
