E3 2019 Sitrep: 5 Post Show Predictions

by Mason Moreau 14 Jun 2019

Still Guesses, Just More Educated

So what's the deal with everyone making predictions before E3 all the time? Yeah, it's fun when a prediction turns out to be true and all, but wouldn't it be easier to make predictions that turn out true AFTER all of the E3 announcements?

In this industry there's always a lull post E3. Especially now after E3 2019 didn't include Sony or Activision, news about some of the big players in the industry just isn't contained by E3 anymore.

So in the spirit of moving with the industry tide we're going to stop considering E3 as the be-all-end-all of gaming news. Instead it'll be more like the beginning of an entire season of shows and news events.

With that, we're changing how we approach predictions and use the info we've gathered from E3 to make even more predictions about what's to come in the future.

BOTW 2 and Metroid Prime 4 will act as "soft launch" games for the rumored more powerful Switch models; will require hard installs

It's already happening guys. With the announcement of The Witcher 3 coming to Switch and requiring a hard install, it only makes sense that will become the norm as we move toward games that are more demanding to the hardware.

Anyone who played BOTW on Switch knows that there are some parts where the game chugged. If Nintendo are actually planning to launch two more Switch models then it would also make sense to have some kickass software that takes advantage of the increased processing power. We didn't hear a peep about these new models during their direct. For what reason? We theorize that they're waiting for some of their killer IPs to launch alongside.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be delayed one more time before release

Cyberpunk is a HUGE game, and that meaty demo we got at the end of last summer just went on to show how ambitious the ideas in this game are. Even though the game as been in development for well over 4 years at this point, for some reason the April 16, 2019 release date just doesn't seem like enough time to full work out all of the bugs.

We don't think a second delay will be very long if it happens. Probably more like a month or so. As far as the wait for the game is concerned, CD Projekt can take as long as they want.

Sony's traditional E3 Show will now happen at PSX; PS5 Will Be Announced

Sony have been pretty reclusive this year. After their significant strides to showcase their efforts in the industry with decorum that rivals the oscars, it seems unlikely that Sony are going to skip out on any sort of expo-style showcase.

Our guess is that they're going to use their PSX show to make all of their big announcements. Microsoft have shown their cards a little bit, and Sony aren't fools. They were watching and will be planning the PS5 reveal accordingly.

Nintendo will eventually announce support for Project xCloud

It's only a matter of time before we start to consider streaming games to our Switches, right? The possibilities of playing games on the go that are beyond the Switch's hardware capabilities have to be something Nintendo is thinking of right now. They've already started partnering up with Microsoft on a few endeavors, and it just seems like the next logical step for a more involved partnership between the two gaming giants.

Bethesda's Orion streaming tech will be the streaming equivalent to Unreal Engine and Unity

What could be described as one of the least discussed, yet brilliant, announcements from E3 2019; Bethesda's Orion streaming tech is incredibly promising. Bethesda has promised a full streaming optimization toolkit to developers. Developers who may have previously seen optimizing their games for streaming as a huge undertaking now have a framework to work from.

Just as Unreal Engine and Unity revolutionized game development to the point where they've basically become the gold standard for studios who don't have the resources to build their own engine, Orion is poised to lower that same barrier for streaming. And we can't wait to see it in action.
