Minecraft Pro Tips: Percision Building, Combat, & Controller Optimization

by Luke Panosian 25 Jul 2025

There are not many games that earn the success, longevity, and even a Hollywood film that Minecraft has accomplished. As one of the most impactful games in the modern era Minecraft is special to everyone who plays it because it truly is the ultimate sandbox game experience. One of the unique aspects of sandbox crafting games is that you can never have two of the same gameplay experiences and with mods you can do almost anything in game. Due to this many players including myself are called back to Minecraft almost annually if not more to start from scratch or drop into a modified adventure that is like nothing ever before. One of the main aspects that has always had me coming back to Minecraft outside of the immense replayability is the crafting and building capabilities. Nothing unlocks your true creativity more than trying to build yourself the ultimate fort or house from scratch. At the same time, you are forced to seek out the exact materials to craft, or dig straight down until you have dug out a full underground empire purely for collecting diamonds.

Similar to other crafting or sandbox games Minecraft has a difficulty tier along with a vast combat system that can be as rewarding as it is frustrating. Especially if you decide to start a hardcore play through, life and death can hang by a thread from the start and you will need to be precise and careful because 1 death and it is over. To take on the brutal hardcore mode, you will want to master combat and defensive movement to even have a chance because one missed shot or poor dodge could be the end of everything. If you have never played hardcore mode before I would highly encourage mastering ranged combat to give yourself the best chance at survival until you can craft a powerful melee weapon or better gear to avoid any one shots. Movement is just as important when it comes to combat as well as survival, and I would recommend increasing your sensitivity quite a bit to be able to quickly snap from mob to mob. Higher sensitivity will also help with building quickness, which is underrated and can be a last-ditch move to save you from being overwhelmed by several mobs with a quick wall or boxing yourself in. Even with higher sensitivity, you will want to ensure you have accurate block placement, so I would encourage you to spend time in your settings making sure you have things optimized to your playstyle.

Best Settings to Improve and Optimize Your Building Precision and Combat Accuracy
Control sensitivity will be the first setting you will want to spend time tweaking and increasing until you find a spot that is faster than you are comfortable with, but slow enough to get used to with time. It may take time to adjust but being able to quickly whip around and land a hit either ranged or in close combat will get you a massive upper hand, so practice a higher setting before jumping into hardcore or a high difficulty. Field of vision (FOV) is another setting I would recommend increasing, especially if you are playing on a larger screen. This will allow you to see more at one time and from a combat perspective this is crucial. Sensitivity is affected as the FOV increases so you may need to find the right balance of the two to make sure you are still able to turn quickly.

To help with building precision, turning your sprint settings to “Sprint by Toggle” will prevent you from accidentally sprinting while building and causing you to constantly delete and rebuild due to overcorrecting. Crouching while building is another way to ensure you are not moving too quickly when building but having the toggle sprint turned on gives you the most control and precision. If you are dealing with issues placing blocks exactly where you want for more complex builds, you can always play in creative mode to get practice without having to worry about resources, fall damage, or falling in general because you can fly in this mode. Lastly, you can increase the outlines of the blocks you are building with by turning on High Contrast Block outlines in the accessibility settings. This will make sure you know exactly where a block will go as you build.

Level Up Your Skills with KontrolFreek’s Minecraft Thumbsticks & No-slip Thumb Grips Creeper Edition
KontrolFreek has teamed up with Minecraft to create the ultimate IRL tool to take your gameplay to the next level with their Minecraft Performance Thumbsticks® – Creeper Edition for Xbox and Playstation controllers. Aside from the incredible Creeper design these 2 low rise concave thumbsticks are a must have for any level of Minecraft player. The advanced GripTek™ material and laser-etched surface help reduce any slippage that you would expect on a default analog thumbstick. Combined with the comfort of the soft rubber material fatigue is almost a non factor so you can grind for hours without stopping or because your thumbs are aching. Once you equip the Minecraft Performance Thumbsticks® – Creeper Edition, you will instantly realize the added height allows for sharper movements and increased accuracy and precision, allowing you to place blocks faster as well as improve your combat experience. You will also enjoy a boost in combat confidence, especially with ranged weapons, as the precision gained will level you up from a novice archer to a master in no time. You will also notice overall movement improves as you will have a larger surface area to try movements with sharper percision, which in turn will enhance your ability to dodge and escape dangerous situations with ease.

For those who may not be playing on Xbox or Playstation, KontrolFreek has also introduced Minecraft No-Slip Thumb Grips - Creeper Edition compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Similar to the performance thumbsticks, this pair of Minecraft No-Slip Thumb Grips include the laser etched Creeper design made with KontrolFree’s advanced GripTek™ material to ensure limited slippage during play. The concave design will have your thumbs fitting snugly, while the ultra-durable rubber will prevent any tearing or stretching when equipping them on your Pro Controller or Joy-Cons. Once equipped you will see an improvement to accuracy and control as your thumbs will have more surface area to master more complex movements and build confidence as you conquer the fiercest of mobs. Another benefit outside of performance is these No-Slip grips are the perfect attachment to revitalize any compatible controller that may have been retired due to wear and tear, just pop these on top and your old controller will feel as good as new. Regardless of how you choose to play Minecraft, whether you are a combat junky or a Minecraft architect, equipping a pair of KontrolFreek’s Minecraft Thumbsticks or No-slip Thumb Grips Creeper Edition, you will immediately level up your play experience.
