Borderlands 4 has finally arrived, and Gearbox has once again brought the gaming community one of the top looter RPGs of the year. For those who played Borderlands 3, Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, or both, this game is a clear upgrade and feels as if the Borderlands formula is in perfect rhythm with this recent release. One of the first things I noticed that felt smoother and more reactive was movement. Now with gliding, double jumping, and more, you can essentially fly around the vast Planet Kairos, plus with vehicles introduced so early, you can choose various ways to travel. As for the Vault Hunters, aka who you will be playing as, 4 distinct characters have in-depth skill trees and various skill sets and powers that give you a rich but unique playthrough every time.

You can play solo or online with friends, and they even brought back split-screen mode so you can play Borderlands 4 side by side with a buddy or sibling. A single vault hunter seems dangerous enough, so I can only imagine the chaos that ensues if you unleash more than one on Planet Kairos. You will not need to worry about anyone stealing your loot, either, because there is still loot instancing where you will have loot tailored to you depending on level. On the topic of loot, that is a feature that did see some focus from BL3 to BL4, and you will notice significantly less legendary, and the new pearlescent rarity will really be worth the effort. Weapons can now be upgraded and even combined to make specialized weapons or to retain a specific aspect of one that you might prefer over its original part. This opens up a world of possibilities when it comes to variety, and you can make unique weapons that play to the strengths of your vault hunter’s abilities. I would encourage everyone who plays Borderland 4 to try out as many weapons as possible in order to develop a feel for each manufacturer. This will help you understand which parts and pieces make the biggest impact on your gameplay. 

Optimize Borderlands 4 Gameplay: Top Controller & Performance Settings

Before you set foot on Planet Kairos, there are a few settings I would like to recommend you try out to see how much of an advantage you can gain from a few tweaks in your menu. Field of Vision is a setting that allows your range of vision to increase significantly, and in a game where chaos is coming from all directions, you will want to maximize your vision on foot and while riding vehicles. Increasing this between 95-105 provides enough extra vision to avoid any blindside attacks or even incoming grenades that can be easily missed. Adjusting your HUD is another quick change that can help you gain as much visibility as possible, although you will want to at least keep it legible so you know where you are headed and other key insights. In Borderlands 4, you will constantly find yourself in the midst of chaos with explosions, gunfights, and more coming from all directions. This chaos can be a bit distracting, especially if you have motion blur combined with screen shake intensity. For those who are looking to reduce these distractions, I would encourage turning both settings down until they no longer impact your accuracy. You can take things even a step further and completely disable haptic feedback, and you will retain steady accuracy during intense battles.

When it comes to your controller settings, there are a few things aside from turning off haptic vibration that can impact your ability to aim and be precise every shot. Look sensitivity will impact how fast you will be able to scan an area and turn. Whether you prefer to aim down your opponents or spray and pray from the hip will determine how high you would like to increase this sensitivity. For those who like to take down opponents from afar, you will want to adjust your ADS sensitivity as well to a higher but comfortable setting. You will also want to make sure aim assist and controller ads snap to target are turned on to maximize your precision and gain an edge. Borderlands 4 offers full button remapping, so if you use a unique grip or have a preferred button arrangement for FPS-type games, you can make this adjustment easily. Lastly, if you have any issues noticing your reticle in the midst of a firefight, you can rotate the color between several options to help keep your aim steady and on the right target.
